Yesterday, I opined:
Many of these children have come because they thought Obama would unilaterally give them citizenship under the Dream Act and Obama’s 2012 executive order that loosened the requirements for people to stay in the country. The Dream Act — which has not been passed or signed into law — would apply to children, so it seems that’s the primary reason for the flood of illegal kids across our southern border. The logic seems obvious… if you tell people they’re gonna get a free pass into Disneyland, they’ll show up in droves. Same logic applies to people from other nations getting into the USA.
Today, I see even more evidence to support that assertion.
CBS reports (emphasis mine):
On a tour Friday of a temporary center at a border patrol training facility in southeastern New Mexico, [U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh] Johnson said more housing is needed so the administration can send a strong message back to Central America, where he said smugglers are telling families that if they make it to the United States they will get a free pass.
“Our border is not open to illegal immigration,” he said. “Our message to those who come illegally is we will send you back.”
After touring the recently opened center, he said staff told him that some of the immigrants told them they were surprised to be detained.
“This facility … represents proof that indeed we will send people back.”
This looks more and more like a manufactured crisis. Obama’s actions told these kids they’d be free to stay, and thus they come.
