Re: Fixing Immigration, Part 2

While my colleague The Masked Blogger has some good ideas for dealing with the “resident illegals” here in the country, his solution strikes me as a new bureaucratic nightmare that could pretty easily be gamed by bureaucrats who want more Democrat voters.

A simpler solution, and the one I’ve backed for some time, is simply to enforce the existing laws on the books against hiring illegals. If they can’t get jobs, either aboveboard or under the table, many of them will self-deport.

For those on public assistance, we do need new laws restricting such assistance to citizens. If that seems to draconian, then we can allow immigrants to have assistance for a few months if — IF — they’re working on becoming legal immigrants. Those that want to stay on the dole forever don’t get to, however.

If the money and bennies dry up, again, a lot of them will self-deport, and that’s a heck of a lot easier than trying to load them all into buses.

Of course, any illegal immigrant convicted of a crime (other than just crossing the border illegally) gets deported immediately. Don’t even bother putting them in jail, that just lets them live at taxpayer expense for a few years. Deport them right after the trial is over. And put their names, photos, fingerprints, and DNA in a file that bars them from ever getting legalized even if they jump through all the hoops.

Tough? Yes, it is. But generations of politicians seeking to pander to illegal immigrants in an attempt to get the votes of legal immigrants have brought us to the point where we can’t really be nice anymore.
