In an unusual game of turnabout, the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, and their Grand Rapids chapter, have gone up on the air to primary Representative Justin Amash. It’s not at all uncommon for the base to primary the establishment figures– it would be surprising if they didn’t– but the Chamber doesn’t usually do things like this. The Chamber has declined to say how much they intend to spend, but they have already done $100,000 worth. Amash’s challenger is Brian Ellis. There is little public polling– RCP has nothing at all– but according to Michigan Live Amash had a 19 point lead back in May. Primary day is August 5.
There’s nothing certain about this, but we can draw some inferences:
- The Chamber thinks Ellis has a shot, or they wouldn’t be wasting the money.
- The Chamber is very serious about keeping political power for crony capitalist corporations.
- Justin Amash is a major thorn in their paw.
Frankly, It’s hard to imagine a better endorsement for a Republican than the Chamber is primarying you. You gotta be doing something right, yes?
